How traders may navigate a jobs report on Good Friday

Stock exchanges are closed on Good Friday but that won’t stop the government from releasing March nonfarm payrolls. So investors are bracing for a market reaction to the most closely watched economic data on Monday.

For short-term stock traders tempted to take a position in anticipation of the data, the smart choice might be to sit this one out, said Art Hogan, chief market strategist at Wunderlich Securities.

“Sometimes the best trade is the one you don’t make,” Hogan said, in a phone interview.

It is difficult to make a bet with great confidence ahead of the report, he said, noting that, for instance, the correlation between ADP private-sector payrolls data and the Labor Department report hasn’t been convincing enough to warrant taking a big position in anticipation of a negative figure.

“You’re going to have plenty of opportunity to get a reaction—and it’s probably going to be a truer reaction—in the market on Monday,” Hogan said.

That’s probably a better strategy then taking
