ANZ says job ads drop suggests peak has passed

Job advertisements fell in March for the first time in nine months, according to the latest ANZ survey, as both online and newspaper vacancies declined.

ANZ said ads were down 1.4 per cent month on month, with internet advertising off 1.3 per cent and newspapers down 3.6 per cent.

The March figures left year-on-year growth in internet ads up 7.5 per cent. Positions vacant in newspapers are down 21.8 per cent compared with the same time last year.

Newspaper ads were particularly week in Northern Territory and South Australia, but strong in Tasmania, ANZ said.

ANZ chief economist Warren Hogan said growth rates in jobs advertising may have peaked.

"Despite declining slightly in March, job advertisements remain elevated," he said.

"This follows two months of slowing growth at the start of 2015.

"We will monitor in coming months, but this may suggest that peak growth in job advertisements has now passed."

The latest statistics come as the Reserve Bank of Australia mulls whether or not to cut interest rates for the second time this year in a bid to stimulate business investment and consumer spending.

"The expectation of rising unemployment continues to suggest that further monetary policy easing will be required," said Mr Hogan.
