Make the most of your bigger Kiwi bucks

It's always satisfying to get one over the Aussies. Our Cricket World Cup dreams were tragically dashed, but now we've got another opportunity to put the boot in.

This week, the Kiwi dollar rivalled the Australian currency in strength - almost. If we had cracked NZ$1 for A$1, it would have been the first time in over 40 years.

Much like that fizzer of a cricket match, we made it to spitting distance of glory and couldn't quite get over the line.

Put some plastic wrap on the onion dip, but don't bin it just yet. The "parity party" will almost certainly swing into life later this year, and it's great news for us consumers.

When the Kiwi dollar is strong, we can buy Australian goods at cheaper prices - food, fruit, medicines, cars, electronics, clothes and heaps of other cool and useful stuff.

Given there are about 500,000 Kiwis living in Aussie, heaps of us have friends and rellies over there.

That means that when we head over the "ditch" for a visit, our converted dollars stretch a whole lot further.

Two years ago, you'd trade in a shiny dollar coin for A81c. Now you'd get about A98c, a hair's breadth away from the full buck.

That's an increase in value of over 20 per cent. If you were planning a trip to Australia anyway, now's a great time to do it.

But before you head off to book tickets, a word of caution.
