5 Things to Watch On The Economic Calendar

1BE ‘PATIENT’ READING THE FED MINUTES

The Federal Reserve releases the minutes of its Jan. 27-28 meeting Wednesday. What interests Fed-watchers is any discussion of the criteria that must be met before the Fed decides to increase interest rates. The housing sector was a disappointment in 2014, with construction and sales not living up to expectations. We get a glimpse of January construction activity Wednesday when the Commerce Department releases data on last month’s housing starts and building permits. Economists surveyed by The Wall Street Journal think starts were little changed at an annual rate of 1.08 million in January. If starts fall short, weather might have been a factor. On Tuesday, the National Association of Home Builders releases the February survey of its members. Builders have trimmed back their expectations about future sales. A rebound in February would be a good sign for future construction.
