Russian billionaires’ fortunes fall with oil price plunge

Western sanctions over the Ukraine crisis, along with plummeting oil prices, have taken a toll on Russia’s billionaires. Three of the five wealthiest Russians have seen their fortunes fall since March 2014. But one of the tycoons whose wealth has increased since then is Roman Abramovich, who owns Chelsea Football Club in the U.K.



Alisher Usmanov, 61, an Uzbek-born businessman and majority shareholder of mining firm Metalloinvest, was the wealthiest man in Russia this time last year, but he lost $4.5 billion — or nearly 25% of his fortune — between March 2014 and December 2014, according to private wealth consultancy Wealth-X. Ukrainian-born Russian businessman Viktor Vekselberg, 57, co-founder of the Russian conglomerate Renova Group, is now No. 1; he only lost $200 million over the same period.
